LifeWorks in Kenya | 06-25-2009
While filming The African Game in Kenya, I travelled along the coast visiting communities in Malindi, Mombassa & Lamu. While in Malindi I met Grover Ainsworth who was doing wonderful work as a community leader. He told me about Lifeworks and it completely moved me.
I learnt that many women in Mariakani, Kenya live on the edge of severe poverty and vulnerability. Income-earning opportunitites are few and many women turn to making money through transactional sex with truck drivers who pass through the town by hundreds each day. This creates a "perfect storm" for driving the AIDS epidemic. The mission of Lifeworks is to prevent HIV through sustainable job creation. In this effort, LifeWorks "Shukrani" and its beautiful inspired home and fashion accessories were developed, providing safe living-wage employment for at-risk women and adult orphans who now have a positive, creative way to support themselves and their families.
As "International Spokesperson" for LifeWorks I am proud and pleased to wear for you some of their beautiful products. A big thank you to photographer James Louis for creating these super fun Lifeworks shots featuring just a few of their colourful fabrics.
Taking pride in their work and the opportunity that has been given to them, the women named this unique brand "Shukrani", which means "We Give Thanks". With the help of Lifeworks Partnership, the women and adult youth of Mariakani, Kenya are now making their dreams a reality.
